Goals

So, usually I make a list of resolutions for the new year, and this year I didn't. Not really by deliberate choice or anything, just forgot or didn't care enough to do that. So now, I'd like to make a list. I don't know if making lists ever really help, but it is good for me to at least get it written/typed down somewhere. Here are my goals for 2015/life.

1. Less screen time...as I type this while looking at a screen. I would guess that I look at my work computer screen about 6 out of 7 hours of my work day. Then, I look at my cell phone screen in between that, to check the bus/text/turn on my music, etc. Then, when I get home, what do I do? Usually watch some TV on a screen. Sometimes that ranges from 30 minutes to 2-3 hours. After that, (and sometimes during), I open my laptop. I am embarrassed to say that I can be on my laptop almost non-stop from about 5pm until I go to bed around 11, that is, if I don't get distracted and stay up until the early morning hours.

Needless to say, I think I need to scale back on the screens. I plan on working multiple goals into one, so, that leads me to goal #2-7

2. Better posture. I slump so much. Usually because I'm hunched over my desk at work or slouched on the couch while watching TV, or laying in bed on my laptop. I sit too much. I sit all day at work, then I sit on the bus or in the car, then I sit on the couch. If I could, I'd get a standing desk at work, but how the desk is set up, that isn't possible. So, I want to get up from my desk and go for walks. I want to try to remember to keep my head level instead of looking down so much at my phone or screen, and I want to engage my abs, so my back isn't taking most of the weight.

3. Get on a better sleep schedule. I want to regularly be in bed by 10:30, even if I read until 11, then go to bed, (see next goal). I also want to wake up earlier on the weekends. I love sleeping in, but anything past 11 bums me out. I also really enjoy having a full day with Justin.

4. Read more! I have actually made progress on this goal, which is regularly featured in my New Year's Resolutions posts. I received a Kindle for Christmas, and I've been reading a bunch of David Sedaris books. It's fun! The thing that is nice about the kindle, is that I don't feel it falls into the "screen time" category. It isn't harshly back lit/LED lights, so it doesn't strain my eyes more than reading a book does. Also, I feel like screen time while reading somehow shouldn't count.

5. Make things. I always feel better when I have a project going, and for some reason I always forget that. I want to finish all of my binder projects (Emergency Binder/Guinea Pig Binder/Garden Binder/Memories/Pet Profiles). I'm gonna need more sheet protectors! Not only do I think these are fun, but they are things that in certain cases, like an Emergency, a half-done Emergency Binder probably won't do me any good.

6. Siiiiiiiiiiigh. This is the one that will forever be on my list. Exercise. Hopefully spring will eventually arrive and I'll be able to go for walks on the city trail by my work during my lunch hour. I need to invest in some good exercise shoes. My current ones are old and are currently acting as my every-day shoes, since my slip-on flats aren't great for the snow. If I divert the amount of time I am looking on a screen to exercise/reading more/crafts, I feel that I would make quite a lot of progress with these goals.

7. Cook more/Eat healthy. These sort of go hand-in-hand for the purpose of this goal. I can bake plenty, but that doesn't mean it's always healthy! It will help save money, and I can improve my skills. I can exercise all I want, but without eating better, I won't reach my full potential. I'm already working on this, but I need to stay focused.

8. PURGE! I LOVE this goal. Out of all of these goals, this is the easiest for me. I love purging. I love cleaning out my closet and getting rid of clutter. It just feels so GOOD. And with us moving back to Utah at the end of this year (woohoo!), I'll need to. I might as well start now! Wheeee! And the second part to purging, is to resist accumulating things. It's not enough to purge, I need to make sure I commit to keeping things minimal.

9. Explore More! We are only going to be in Bloomington for 10 more months. That seems like a long time, but it really isn't. I want to make sure we take advantage of our time here. For example, we could drive to Nashville, Tennessee. We could drive to a Cincinnati Reds game if we wanted. We haven't tried all of the Bloomington Restaurants that we want, and we haven't gone on the hikes that we want to, either. I would love to go see a concert at the Jacobs School of Music, which is one of the highest ranked music programs in the nation.

10. Routine changes: I like schedules. I like charts. I like lists. But I still can't quite apply structure very well. That is why I want to start regularly/routinely doing my laundry. I want to go to bed around the same time. I want to exercise regularly. I want to read consistently. I want to clean the entire apartments every Thursday. Or clean out the car every other Friday. Or whatever the improvement/task is, I want to do it regularly. This is because with routine, things that seem like a chore or a dreaded task, becomes habit. And with my goals, I want them to be things that become part of my lifestyle, not just something I check off my list.

2014 Resolutions

Alright, these goals are sort of "the usual" ones I make every time. But I think it is good to keep goals present and to sort of "refresh" my commitment. I decided to divide these goals up into categories of self-improvement. These categories are:
1. Financial, 2. Physical, 3. Mental, 4. Interpersonal, and 5 Misc. Hobbies & Projects

1. Be financially conscientious. We have been really good with money, simply out of necessity. But I also want to make sure we are on the same page and are working toward similar goals and have similar expectations with our income and expenses.  My goal is to have a meeting about once a week or thereabouts to go over finances. This will include checking in with Justin on our financial goals. These include short-term, medium-term and long-term goals.

2. Physical exercise. This can be running, (Couch to 5k app is going to help me with that), hiking, walking, "finishers" (crunchies, squats, push-ups, armstrongs, lunges, wall-sits, jumping jacks, etc.), Youtube videos of yoga/pilates/aerobics workouts, P90 DVDs, or simply cranking up some good music and dancing around the apartment. Not that I'm going to do ALL of these ALL the time, but that I have a lot of options. If I'm especially worn out, I can just do several rotations of finishers. If it is rainy or cold outside, I can do a DVD or Youtube tutorial, if I can't bring myself to follow directions after being at work all day, I'll dance! And as the weather improves I have more opportunities with running and hiking. Mostly my goal is to have an active lifestyle. It isn't to exercise. It is to be active.

3. Mental exercise. This includes doing my logic puzzles (this will be easy, I do several almost every night before going to bed) and MAKING logic puzzles (not as easy and more time consuming, but fun).
This also includes reading. I have a bunch of text books and nonfiction books I want to read that have been sitting on my bookshelf for ages. I also want to read for fun. Mostly, I want less screen time and more book time. This is probably one of the most challenging things, because screen time means internet, and it is soooo easy to get sucked into the internet. (as I post this...on the internet).
Another mental goal is to continue learning and exercising Spanish. I have downloaded some apps and got a Spanish textbook, so I am hoping if I just take a few minutes every day to go over Spanish, I can keep up.
Finally, my last mental exercise is...(don't laugh), learning my times tables. I am okay at these, but I never ever did get them down pat and I never had the motivation to.

4. Interpersonal exercise. This is sort of my "don't be a flake" goal. I want to make sure I work to foster friendships. This includes inviting my acquaintances Mami & Jeff over for dinner and games, replying to emails, facebook messages, texts, letters, and postcards, and actively writing those, instead of just replying.
Within my interpersonal goals, I also want to be more present. (aka, less screen-time). I want to play board and card games with Justin, go on walks, cook together, and also hold our Finer Things Club meetings. (I'm planning a Sherlock themed one soon. Tea and biscuits, anyone?

5. My last goal is to work on my hobbies and projects. These include weaving on my mini-loom, making my logic puzzles (as mentioned earlier), making music videos, writing down memories, maintaining my scrapbook of ticket stubs and travel tickets, etc., blogging more regularly, transcribing/copying recipes from online recipes I like to recipe cards,  re-potting my plants, and finally, regularly organizing and reducing my possessions to only the items of essential or sentimental value. This last goal is really just to enjoy time away from the computer or television.

Five big categories, but I'm feeling good about them!

+1 Goal

Go to bed before 12:00, preferably 11. Wake up by 9. Also, don't be on the computer right before bed. Do a logic puzzle or read instead. Even if it is just one puzzle or just one chapter.

January Goals Update

I want to have a check-in on my goals every month. This is my 2013 goals update for January.

Maintenance Goals:

1. Exercise. I want to exercise at least 3 times a week. So far I have met that goal since I started. In fact, last week I exercised five times! The exercise that I have not yet started is running and strength training. So far I have only done cycling and yoga. I ran for about 10 (nonconsecutive) minutes, but man. I forget how intense running is. I am hoping that once the snow melts and the inversion clears out I can start running outside. I also need to charge my iPod so that my mind can get absorbed into the music instead of my burning lungs and wobbly legs.

2. Eat better. I have been using the myfitnesspal.com website, and have consistently been under calories. Well, except for the past two days. I'm working on that, though. I also have not eaten out for lunch for a long while. Instead I keep bread and peanut butter and apple sauce in my work drawer.

3. Spend wisely. I am wanting to do better on this. I think so far I have been fine, but the main problem is that I need to get to work on time. Then I can transfer more money over to savings when I get it. So far I only transferred $50 over, when I really should be transferring $100. Part of the problem is that there isn't a distinction within my savings account that says 'emergency' or 'vacation' or 'around-the-house-things-I-want'.

4. Cook more. I haven't really done a ton of this. Not really. I've prepared meals, but putting a tortilla on a skillet and sprinkling shredded cheese over it doesn't really count in my opinion. The last meal I made was the shrimp/coconut/cilantro noodle dish. Maybe I'll make something tonight.

5. Read more. So. I haven't read a book this month. Maybe I'll start reading The Great Gatsby, since that movie is coming out and it's a classic.

6. Study Spanish. I have sort of been MIA with duolingo, which is dumb because it is at your own pace and not that hard. I'll get back on that.

Event Goals:

1. Run 5ks/10ks/half marathon. The problem with this goal is that races are bizarrely expensive. 25 bucks to run 3.2 miles? 30 to run double that? Not sure I can justify spending 55 bucks for 2 races. Maybe I'll create my OWN races.
2. Make my children's books. Nope. Haven't even started.
3. Have a wedding at a reasonable price. Well, so far everything that I've purchased is pretty cheap! Family is helping out and hopefully we can keep it reasonable.

2013 Goals

I have been updating goals that I posted in 2012. But I feel that it would be better to post a more realistic (meaning less ambitious, haha) and more specific goals. Here we go!

Maintenance Goals:

1. Exercise. I want to exercise at least 3 times a week. Either running, strength training, cycling or yoga.  It does not matter what form of exercise, but just some form of exercise for at least 30 minutes. There are free group exercise classes on campus. The classes will give me some wiggle room, since different classes are held everyday. So if I miss one, I can always go to the next.

2. Eat better. This means I want to: a) not eat fast food, b) pack my lunch, c) eat out less, d) drink more water

3. Spend wisely. Every paycheck I want to set aside money for a) emergency fund, b) vacation, c) around-the-house things that I want.

4. Cook more. This will help me achieve goals #2 and #3. Eating better and spending more wisely is easier if I am making my own food.

5. Read more. Read at least one new book every month.

6. Study Spanish. I am using a website called duolingo.com which is similar to how my online Spanish homework was. I have also heard about a meetup group for speaking Spanish, which allows all levels.

Event Goals:

1. Run 5ks/10ks and a 1/2 marathon

2. Make my children's books

3. Have a wedding for a reasonable price!

August

Two more weeks of summer classes, one week of vacation, and then 4 months of fall classes and then I graduate! It doesn't seem like I should be allowed to graduate, honestly! I think everything is lining up pretty well in terms of the bigger picture. Feeling very optimistic! In other news, I have started to go to a strength training class, and plan to take a cycling class in the fall. That combined with a schedule I have put together for exercise will hopefully pave the way to my ambition of running a half-marathon. :) And honestly, in a way, I would like to run a half-marathon, but more than that I want to be healthy and fit and confident!

Goals Revisit: April

I skipped a Goals update for March, but so far I have posted for January and February.

1. Exercise more!
We all know this one. I think the 1/2 marathon is off. I think it would be more rewarding to run a half marathon that I actually seriously trained for.

2. Eat better!
I want to pack my lunches. Eating out so much isn't helping with this goal.

3. Cook!
Not much progess here. For one thing the only meal that I would be home in order to cook is dinner. And by the time I get home I usually don't care enough. I hope this summer that can change.

4. Spend less!
Well. This is mixed. At one point I had 64 cents in my checking account. But I also feel that the things that I had bought that put me in that situation were out-of-the-ordinary purchases and may be excused. Other than a shopping spree at Target this past week, I am doing okay. Gas is the main killer of this goal.

5. Sew/Crochet!
I haven't done much of this since the last update.

6. Clean & Organize!
Did a huge clean out not long ago. Still feeling good about it. Maybe I should move on to the guest and sewing rooms when finals are over.

7. Treehouse!
I swear one of these weekends I'll get out there.

8. Garden!
Haven't done much for this, BUT for Easter I got radish and pea seeds. Perfect spring gift.

9. Reading!
FINALLY. A goal I have actually had progress on! I have now officially read The Hunger Games! I finished today and I have to say, I really like them. Now I want to see the movie. (Sorry Kiki about not being able to. I'm missing a movie/game night. Finals are killing me, but after would you be interested?)

10. Logic puzzles! I haven't made any, but I recently finished a bunch. Sooo, that counts for something, right?

11. Document Life!
More progress! I made that video for my little trip to Moab. It was a lot of fun. I want to make more.

12. Communication!
I think I'm getting better. Not sure. I think things are easier for me, at least.

So. This pretty much confirms my feelings of being lame. But everything will get easier after finals are over, I hope.

Goals Revisit

1. Exercise more!
I've been running for my half marathon, which means I've been running four times a week and hiking one day. I think that is fulfilling that goal so far.

2. Eat better!
Although running helps this, I still could improve. I have started to justify eating unhealthy food by saying I can eat it because I'm going to run later. But I need to be fueling my body with better things.

3. Cook!
Uh, I haven't done anything about this, haha. But I got these little recipe cards with quick recipes, so maybe I'll try to cook more. That will help with eating better and probably with my next goal, which is...

4. Spend less!
I have spent less money on needless chai tea or overpriced fruit leather from the union building on campus, but I should probably spend less money eating out. Other than that, carpooling with my mom helps.

5. Sew/Crochet!
Kiki! You have helped me with this one a lot! My goal is to have 3 dish rags by Valentine's Day. It will probably not happen with school, but that is what I would like.

6. Clean & Organize!
Okay! I am in the middle of this one. I just did a major rearranging of my room and now I want to go through everything and get rid of a TON of school notes and assignments that for some reason I have held onto. And go through my wardrobe (mainly shoes) and get rid of things I don't need.

7. Treehouse!
I can't really work on this one until the spring.

8. Garden!
Same problem.

9. Reading!
I think I'm going to wait until the semester is over for this one.

10. Logic puzzles! Finish my logic puzzle book. Minimum of 20 puzzles!
Well. I have 4. I haven't worked on them for a while, but 4 is better than 0!

11. Document Life!
I haven't done this at all. I'll think about starting sometime soon. Maybe I can take some time to videotape things on the weekends, if only by walking outside for a little bit and catching my surroundings.

12. Communication!
I think I am improving, but it is still a struggle. I am thinking of going to a counselor on campus and working on this. I know it will be a life-long effort.

10 weeks

10 weeks until the semester is over! 10 weeks until my half marathon!

1/2 Marathon

Okay. So. Remember how one of my goals was to exercise more? Well. I've decided I'm going to run in the Salt Lake City 1/2 marathon! I'm nervous and excited and determined. And honestly the image in my mind that makes me look forward to it is seeing my best friend and family rooting me on. The longest I have ever ran has been 7 miles, a long time ago. (and it nearly killed me! haha) But I am determined. I have created a schedule that increases my minimum mileage every week by a mile. The longest I will run will be 12 miles (besides the 13.1 miles of the race). I have been making routes using Google Maps, and hopefully I can beg or bribe someone to bike alongside me. Eh? Eh???

2012 Goals

In full disclosure this post started out as me complaining about how I feel out of shape and I am worried about money and I feel like I ruin moments, etc. (Also, I spilled my chai and I'm out of my favorite flavor of Odwalla bars and I don't want to work on my homework)

Uhm...okay, I was going to say but look! I changed things around! I took negatives and made them into positives! But actually, I just complained anyway, but with less detail. So..That felt kind of good. But I'm still going to state my overdue goals!

A little late, but better than never I suppose! These are sort of ambitious, but they are things I can continuously work on.
(in no particular order)

1. Exercise more! Although I always feel like running makes me feel the most in shape, I need to integrate other activities like yoga, hiking, and biking.

2. Eat better! This sort of goes along with exercising. And usually once I start exercising, eating better comes along with it. Along with this, I need to remember to take my vitamins more regularly. I will need to work that into my routine. (maybe I'll make my google calendar remind me, since I check it almost every day)

3. Cook!I want to learn how to cook and bake. I want to be able to contribute once I am responsible for feeding more than myself. This will also help me eat better.

4. Spend less! Spend less money on things I don't need. Be more careful, and maybe even budget each month. It is okay to spend on things sometimes, but I don't need a chai every day, just because I walk past a Starbucks to class everyday. Cooking more and eating healthy will probably help me not spend money on food, which is the biggest thing I spend money on, other than gas maybe.

5. Sew/Crochet! I want to learn how to crochet. I also want to learn how to make clothing. I know you just follow a pattern, but it is something that always intimidates me. I have always enjoyed having an activity that I can do while watching a movie, all snuggled up. Plus I enjoy making people home-made gifts, and this will broaden my choices.

6. Clean & Organize! I want to go through my entire room and get rid of things that I never use and no longer need. This will include all of my old school junk, my wardrobe, my desk, etc. I also want to clean out under my bed and under the windowseat. If I'm feeling really ambitious maybe even the back storage room. I want to also organize all of our photos, my certificate binder that my grandma gave me so long ago, and my filing folder I got for Christmas.

7. Treehouse! I can't really work on this one until the spring. But I need to stain the treehouse. And I want to clean it out, and clean out the yard underneath it. I want to make a good gate that extends across the bridge so the cows don't eat my sugar peas and radishes (again). I also want to plant flowers. This leads me to my next goal:

8. Garden! I want a really good garden this year. I need to figure out where I can have it, because under the treehouse doesn't get enough sun for many of the plants I want to plant. I want to use my tire containers, too. I want a garden similar to the garden at the Nature Center. (hee, I love the garden at the Nature Center. I also love the habitat restoration specialist at the Nature Center!!!)

9. Reading! This has long been a goal of mine. I need to force myself to do this sometimes. I think it is hard when I read in school so much and then I don't want to read anything more. But I think if I read at least 2 books each month, by choice, that will be good. This will probably start after the semester ends.

10. Logic puzzles! Finish my logic puzzle book. Minimum of 20 puzzles!

11. Document Life!
I want to make little movies constantly, just capturing little bits of life, like I did with my summer music video. Just continuously gathering footage. I think it will be fun.

12. Communication! This is sort of a seperation from the type of goals I have listed so far. I want and need to work on communicating better. It is something that I know is a problem, and for the health of all relationships, I need to do better. I think recognizing it the first step, but I need to not say that that is enough. I need to push myself to not keep things to myself. I have not yet identified if it is because of pride or fear (or both, I suppose) that I feel I can't express my feelings. But I need to figure that out. Because I don't want to hurt those I love.

Goals

So, I didn't really make new year's resolutions. Well, I sort of did, but nothing "official" or anything. But I decided today that my new goal, for life in general, is to create the life that I want. I see other people, and I realize that I wish I had their life, or their confidence, or their house, or their clothes, and more worldly goods. But I decided firstly, I need to make sure I never stray from simple. Simplicity I think is a big key in happiness. Another thing that I want to work towards, is instead of wanting other people's lives, I want to want MY life. And in order to do that, I have to work to become the person I want to be, and create the life I want to lead. It seems basic, but if it were, I think there would be a lot more happy people in the world.

There are other normal type goals, and they are also important, but that is my main goal. Other goals are things like exercise, eating right, work to maintain my garden this spring, and to try to clean out the house/my room of things that I don't need, and donate them, and to get a job. Also, to try and read and write more, but with school, that can be sort of hard. That is why this summer, I am going to try to not sleep in so much, and to not stay up so late (out of all my goals, this seems the least attainable, to be honest!)

My main goal is going to be a constant struggle, I think, but the main thing is to always keep it on my mind. I always have trouble with making goals and maintaining them, mostly because I forget what I am striving towards, and I just fall back into my old ways. Wish me luck!

Ten Minutes

I just exercised for the first time in a long time. I really really hope I can keep it up. It is ridiculous how lazy I have gotten. I blame the holidays. And winter....and the universe. And basically anything/one that isn't me. (haha, okay, so maybe I blame me. But it is funner to deflect blame) I only ran for ten minutes, which is pretty pathetic, but I figure I don't really have a deadline or anything, and I don't want to over do it, and then either burn out physically or mentally.

IIIIIII would walk 500 miles and IIIIII would walk 500 more, just to be the girl who walked a 1000 miles...so you could never know about it, but I would feel better about myself, and perhaps be more confident/outgoing? yeah, we'll say that.
